TOAST

For many people, one of the vital ingredients in an early breakfast is toast. This year there are increasing signs that the Kamala Harris campaign is toast. The early voting results are starting to come in and if the results are any indication of what will happen on election day, Kamala Harris and Democrat candidates down ballot are in serious trouble. In previous years, Democrats always outperformed Republicans during early voting. This is partly because of the Democrat ground game and partly because Republicans are skeptical about mail-in voting. But this year, Republicans are showing up strong in early voting results and in some cases outperforming Democrats. That has to be setting off alarm bells all over the country for the Democrat party.

In addition, Kamala Harris continues to perform very poorly during interviews, even from “News” Organizations typically favoring Democrats. She often can’t even hit a slow pitch soft ball question. She routine bombs questions that are far beyond predictable. In addition, her surrogates are not exactly doing well either. When pressed on the subject, Governor Josh Shapiro could not point out anything Kamala Harris is proposing that is different that what President Biden is doing. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Most people recognize insanity when they see it, but increasingly most people are not members of the Democrat party.

Then, shockingly, the Los Angeles Times refused to endorse Kamala Harris. Now if there is one newspaper in the country guaranteed to toe the Democrat line, it is the Los Angeles Times. If Kamala Harris has lost the LA Times, she has lost everywhere.

Kamala Harris is slowing down appearances and sometimes takes entire days off. Donald Trump is also cancelling some events, but probably for a hugely different reason. In the case of Kamala, many people think the less we see of her the less we hate her. The Democrat strategy for success in 2020 was based on keeping Biden in the basement. Trump, on the other hand, may be listening to good advice. “When your opponent is self-destructing, don’t get in the way.”  In addition, the assassination threat is very real, so choosing events carefully from a security standpoint just makes sense. This is one reason Trump has given up golf until after the election.

It is impossible to safely predict things two weeks before an election. Sometimes we really don’t know what is happening until the last minute. The same is true of the weather. Those of us in Florida were warned about the potential for a hurricane like Milton for about two weeks. Even after the storm had clearly developed and was heading toward Florida, it was far from certain where, exactly, it would make land fall. Then suddenly, in the very last hours, that storm veered to the right and hit land about 45 miles south of Tampa Bay. If that storm had veered north instead of south the rest of the country would have had trouble even imagining the damage that would have been done to the Tampa Bay region.

We still don’t know where this election is heading, but we can sure see which direction the wind is blowing. Even the strongest Democrat pollsters are saying an extremely narrow win by Kamala Harris is possible, but they are also admitting a very real chance of a Trump landslide. So far, it sure looks like Republicans are the ones showing up in the early voting. If that continues, the forecast is definitely improving.
