Here in South Florida, it is impossible to watch the local news or any sporting event on TV without being inundated with annoying ads from high profile attorneys. But there is an exception that occurs during every election cycle. Now we are overwhelmed by political ads explaining why their opponent is the spawn of Satan while they are competing for Saint Hood. It is beyond annoying.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Obviously, people with serious money are funding these ads and they must believe this is helping their candidate win. That may or may not be true, but it is unmistakable evidence that someone is expecting to profit big time if their candidate wins. It is a reminder that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It would be extremely difficult for any politician to act solely in the best interest of his or her constituents while ignoring the special interests that fund their campaigns.<\/strong><\/p>\n

People elected to congress receive a nice salary and benefits. But while they are well paid, it does not come close to explaining how so many of them become filthy, and I do mean filthy, rich while in office. One obvious problem is insider training. People in congress are aware of legislation that can have a major impact on a particular industry or company. They can buy or sell stock at just the right time, because they have information not available to the public. There have recently been attempts to limit insider trading by politicians, but while that seems appropriate it is unlikely to solve the problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the meantime, while suffering through endless attack ads, it seems like the only option is to vote for the lessor of two evils. Democracy is great, enduring endless political attack ads, not so much.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the problem is more apparent and harder to ignore today, it is nothing new. A look at the earliest U.S. presidential elections suggests that campaigns were, if anything, even worse. There was no television or radio, so newspapers, conducted the attacks. Candidates themselves are much more restrained at in-person events.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you listen to the \u201cexperts<\/em>\u201d the key issue this year, as in most years, is the economy. Bill Clinton campaigned for President with a strategy that focused on \u201cit\u2019s the economy, stupid<\/em>.\u201d It worked. President George H.W. Bush, who was extremely popular after winning the first Iraq war, was defeated by those who believed that Clinton\/Gore would fix the economy. The Clinton policies were an unmitigated disaster. But he caught a break, because Republicans took over the House and the Senate during the midterms. Then the economy did get better, not because of Clinton, but despite him. Clinton was smart enough to recognize the obvious and take undeserved credit for the results. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite the noise, elections do matter and this year they may matter even more. To me, the genuine issues are not which candidate will lower the cost of my groceries, my gas, or my electric bill. It is which candidate represents a clear and present danger to Democracy. The liberal left has taken over the Democrat Party, and they are running candidates who are truly frightening. Some of them have connections with terrorist organizations. Blue cities and blue states have allowed criminals to roam free with little consequences because of no-cash bail. They not only allow illegal aliens to avoid being deported, but they also encourage them with free health care and other benefits, often benefits unavailable to people here legally. The obvious reason is that they want power, and they believe these illegal aliens will vote for them. This is why Democrats are so opposed to voter ID and other election integrity issues. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The MSM gloats over Trump\u2019s approval rating. They ignore the fact that the approval rating for congress is even lower. Trump has been traveling non-stop attending political rallies all over the country. His schedule is unbelievable. He is also campaigning with a hugely different message. He is warning America that voting for Democrats is voting for Democrat Socialists and that if we want to see what that looks like check, out the riots in France. <\/strong><\/p>\n

It is never wise to predict the outcome of elections, but one thing is already clear. People are turning out to vote, and Republicans are turning out earlier than in prior years. It has been increasingly obvious that political polls have little credibility. Some of them aren\u2019t even real polls. <\/strong><\/p>\n

This reminds me of a Gomer Pyle show. Gomer and Sergeant Carter are trapped near a bomb getting ready to explode. Sergeant Carter asks Gomer which wire he would cut. Gomer says \u201cred<\/em>.\u201d Sergeant Carter immediately cuts the \u201cblack<\/em>\u201d wire, disarming the bomb. Gomer said, \u201cwhy did you ask me, only to ignore me<\/em>?\u201d Sergeant Carter responded: \u201cbecause the only thing I could be sure about was that you would be wrong.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Exactly. The only thing certain is that the polls are guaranteed to be wrong and so are a high percentage of talking heads predicting ridiculous results. Hold your breath, except while voting.<\/strong><\/p>\n
