Abraham Lincoln did not with the Presidency in 1860, he won it in 1858.\u00a0 There were a series of seven debates with Senator Stephen Douglas.\u00a0 Douglas won re-election as Senator.\u00a0 Lincoln won the Presidency two years later.\u00a0 Lincoln asked Douglas the following question:<\/p>\n

\u201cCan the people of a United States territory, in any lawful way, against the wish of any citizen of the United States, exclude slavery from its limits prior to the formation of a state constitution?”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Douglas was doomed.\u00a0 He if said \u201cno\u201d,<\/strong> then he was admitting that the federal government could not stop slavery from expanding elsewhere.\u00a0 That would be a fatal position in a Northern State like Illinois.\u00a0 But if he said \u201cyes\u201d<\/strong>, southern Democrats would never forgive him.<\/p>\n

Douglas said yes.\u00a0 He won the election, but that answer cost him any chance at the Presidency in 1860.<\/p>\n

During the Las Vegas debate Ted Cruz may have done the same thing to Marco Rubio.\u00a0 Actually, to some extent, it may have been a self-inflicted wound.\u00a0 The Republican Establishment believes that authorizing the NSA to monitor everyone\u2019s phone some how keeps us all safe.\u00a0 I personally question that.\u00a0 So do a lot of other people.\u00a0 Marco Rubio scored big time with the Republican establishment by bragging that he supported this.\u00a0 But instead of getting defensive, Cruz pointed out, brilliantly, that if you try to investigate everyone you end up investigating no one.<\/p>\n

That was not the only issue.\u00a0 Cruz also got Rubio to double down on removing Assad.\u00a0 Again, that sounds good to a lot of the Republican establishment, but Cruz has a point. \u00a0So far a lot of those \u201cso-called friendly rebels have turned out to be Muslim Extremists.\u201d Liberals ridiculed Cruz for saying the following:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe keep hearing from\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>President Obama<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Hillary Clinton<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/strong>and Washington Republicans that they\u2019re searching for these mythical, moderate rebels. They\u2019re like purple unicorns. They never exist. These moderate rebels end up being jihadists.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

To this rest of us this sounded a lot like the truth.<\/p>\n

So far the pundits believe that Rubio and Cruz came out even during the exchange.\u00a0 Rubio is very polished and he looked good.\u00a0 But the pundits also thought that Douglas won the Lincoln \u2013 Douglas debates.\u00a0 These things are almost impossible to fully comprehend as they occur. \u00a0For example, Lincoln\u2019s Gettysburg address was widely panned, by many reporters at the time. \u00a0I suspect the more people understand what Cruz said the more it will matter.<\/p>\n
