GIVE THANKS<\/p>\n

Note: \u00a0I wrote this in December 2013. \u00a0I thought things were bad then. \u00a0If anything, it is even worse now. \u00a0Abraham Lincoln reminded us that there is always a good reason to give thanks, we just need to pay attention.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday.\u00a0 He did this in the fall of 1863, when things were still pretty grim.\u00a0 The Union Army had defeated the Confederates at the Battle of Gettysburg, but then the Confederate Army got away, again.\u00a0 There was no evidence that the bloody civil war was about to end anytime soon.\u00a0 So I had to ask, why was Lincoln so thankful?\u00a0 He certainly wasn\u2019t riding high politically.\u00a0 Lincoln was facing opposition in both parties.\u00a0 About the only thing people agreed on was that Lincoln was doing a lousy job as President.\u00a0 He was so unpopular that he almost wasn\u2019t even invited to speak at Gettysburg.\u00a0 At the most he was expected to say a few, meaningless words.\u00a0 Lincoln was still looking for a general who could lead the Union to victory.\u00a0 So far, every General he had chosen was a miserable failure.\u00a0 Even when the Union won a battle, the loss of life on both sides was beyond horrific.\u00a0 Yet, Lincoln was grateful.\u00a0 Following is the text of that Thanksgiving proclamation:<\/p>\n

Lincoln was thankful that the carnage of the civil war was unable to destroy the bountiful crops or the healthful skies.\u00a0 He was grateful that no foreign country took advantage of our civil war to attack us.\u00a0 He was thankful that the country continued to grow both in wealth and population and even the bloody civil war could not change that.\u00a0 Lincoln recognized that these were unearned gifts from almighty God.<\/p>\n

No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercys.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is so easy to point out everything that is wrong in the world today.\u00a0 Only a na\u00efve liberal fool would think that things are going well.\u00a0 Pessimists are wondering how this country can even recover.\u00a0 Our economy is pathetic.\u00a0 We have become the laughingstock of the world.\u00a0 The problems are very obvious and all too real.\u00a0 But ultimately, God is still in control and what really matters will continue to matter tomorrow, the day after tomorrow and forever.\u00a0 Our fields are indeed bountiful.\u00a0 We continue to find the natural resources we need.\u00a0 Men and women continue to marry, they continue to have children and they continue to raise families.\u00a0 No government has ever been able to stop that.\u00a0 While the world is truly a dangerous place, we live in a remarkably free society with a standard of living unimaginable in much of the world.\u00a0 We are truly blessed.<\/p>\n

Governments come and governments go.\u00a0 No government is as strong as they think.\u00a0\u00a0 Good governments aren\u2019t as great as we think and terrible governments aren\u2019t as powerful as they seem.\u00a0 All political power is fleeting.\u00a0 The Bible reminds us that pride goes before a fall and a haughty spirit before destruction.\u00a0 It was true in the past.\u00a0 It will be true in the future.\u00a0 It is true now.\u00a0 It is true when Conservatives are in power and it is true when Liberals are in power.<\/p>\n

For this reason, I choose to be thankful.\u00a0 I am thankful that the things that really matter are not subject to the whims of mortal man.\u00a0 I am thankful that God is still on the throne and the future continues to look bright and promising.\u00a0 Give thanks for what really matters.\u00a0 The rest is just temporary anyway.<\/p>\n
