Henry Wadworth Longfellow wrote \u201cI heard the bells on Christmas Day\u201d <\/strong>on Christmas Day in 1863.\u00a0 He wife had died and his son had been severely wounded.\u00a0 The Civil War was raging with no end in sight:<\/p>\n

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
\nTheir old, familiar carols play,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

and wild and sweet<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The words repeat<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

And thought how, as the day had come,
\nThe belfries of all Christendom<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Had rolled along<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The unbroken song<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Till ringing, singing on its way,
\nThe world revolved from night to day,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A voice, a chime,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A chant sublime<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Then from each black, accursed mouth
\nThe cannon thundered in the South,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

And with the sound<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The carols drowned<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It was as if an earthquake rent
\nThe hearth-stones of a continent,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

And made forlorn<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The households born<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

And in despair I bowed my head;
\n“There is no peace on earth,” I said;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

“For hate is strong,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

And mocks the song<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
\n“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Wrong shall fail,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Right prevail,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

With peace on earth, good-will to <\/em><\/strong>men.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This was true in 1863 and it is true now. As we celebrate the birth of the Savior, may we all take hope and courage in the firm knowledge that; yes indeed the wrong shall fail and yes indeed the right will prevail.<\/p>\n
