They have a saying in grad school.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIf you don\u2019t know where you\u2019re going, any path will do.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> Unfortunately President Obama never took that course.\u00a0 I have no idea what Obama plans to achieve in Iraq and neither does anyone else, including our friends and enemies.\u00a0 That is a serious problem.<\/p>\n

This is frighteningly similar to how the mess in Vietnam started.\u00a0 President Johnson responded to an alleged attack on two U.S. destroyers.\u00a0 That resulted in air strikes over North Vietnam.\u00a0 At each point there was no strategy for success, just escalation after escalation in response to uncontrollable events.\u00a0 Then Johnson decided it wasn\u2019t worth it after all, so he tried to just quit.<\/p>\n

One has to be glad that Obama did something to save those unfortunate souls trapped on the mountain in Iraq.\u00a0 Regardless of what else happens, that is a good thing.\u00a0 However, it is hard to even imagine where we go from here.\u00a0 This is unlikely to end well.<\/p>\n

Ironically Obama himself described the problem.\u00a0 The following story explains:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cI think we [and] our European partners underestimated the need to come in full force if you\u2019re going to do this,\u201d Obama said about his 2011 campaign to remove Libya\u2019s dictator, Moammar Gadhafi.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Without U.S. forces on the ground to help a new government establish itself, the country is being wrecked by a slow-motion civil war between competing jihadi and tribal groups.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know what is more shocking.\u00a0 That Obama could accurately describe the problem in Libya or that he would be so oblivious regarding the implications for his strategy in Iraq.
