Watching the mess in Washington DC these days reminds me of the song from the Thomas Crown Affair, \u201cThe Windmills of Your Mind.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>A couple of the lines seem very appropriate to describe the current Washington Merry-go-round:<\/p>\n

Round like a circle in a spiral
\nLike a wheel within a wheel
\nNever ending or beginning
\nOn an ever-spinning reel<\/i><\/b><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Like a tunnel that you follow
\nTo a tunnel of its own
\nDown a hollow to a cavern
\nWhere the sun has never shone<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Barack Obama appears to be caught in a time warp.\u00a0 He can neither move forward or backward.\u00a0 He desperately needs to fire Eric Holder, but he also desperately needs Holder to stay in office.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The investigation of Eric Holder has been assigned to Eric Holder.\u00a0 If there is to be a Special Counsel, he or she would be appointed by Holder.\u00a0 The FBI probe of the IRS scandal was ordered by Holder.\u00a0 The one man we must be able to trust is the one man who cannot be trusted.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

Did Holder commit perjury?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 It depends on how generous one wants to be in parsing his testimony.\u00a0 \u00a0Could a skilled lawyer make an argument that this wasn\u2019t precisely perjury?\u00a0 The answer is yes.\u00a0 It is similar to when Bill Clinton tried to explain his lie by saying it depends on the meaning of the word \u201cis.\u201d<\/b>\u00a0 The sad reality is that the testimony Holder gave was extremely deceptive.\u00a0 We are left to wonder whether this was the result of mere incompetence or perjury.\u00a0 Ultimately it doesn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 In either case, this is not someone we can trust.<\/p>\n

Michael Gerson nailed this in his May 29, 2013 opinion in the Washington Post:<\/p>\n

Forcing Holder to resign really matters.\u00a0 It is not that getting rid of Holder would solve all problems.\u00a0 It won\u2019t.\u00a0 It is rather that Holder is the one person in the administration who probably knows where the bodies are buried. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

If Holder goes Obama will have to appoint someone acceptable to both parties as a replacement.\u00a0 He will have to appoint someone with a reputation for honesty and integrity.\u00a0 Even if he appoints someone like Deval Patrick, which is the latest rumor, that may really change things.\u00a0 Deval Patrick is a liberal Democrat and a strong supporter of Obama, but unlike Obama he is a man of legitimate accomplishment.\u00a0 Patrick actually has the kind of academic credentials that are falsely attributed to Obama.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know if Patrick would be the choice to replace Holder, but that is at least a rumor.<\/p>\n

If you want to understand Deval Patrick, you need to look at the case of Benjamin LaGuer.<\/p>\n

Patrick even contributed $5,000 for DNA testing that most people thought would clear LaGuer.\u00a0 Instead the DNA evidence confirmed his guilt.\u00a0 Significantly, Patrick stopped supporting the release of LaGuer when he learned the facts.<\/p>\n

He has also done something Eric Holder could never do, he has admitted mistakes.\u00a0 He made a call on behalf of Citigroup,and at first tried to defend it by saying he was calling as a private citizen, not a governor.\u00a0 He later backed down and said:\u00a0 \u201dI appreciate that I should not have made the call.\u00a0 I regret the mistake.\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 The point is that at least with Patrick there appears to be a line he simply will not cross.\u00a0 There is no such line with Holder.<\/p>\n

In the meantime we are caught in the Windmills of the Mind <\/span><\/b>\u00a0always circling back to Eric Holder.\u00a0 Almost any alternative would be better than this.\u00a0<\/p>\n
