THE SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD

Democratic hearts were all a twitter with the faint hope that Susan Collins would see the light and cast the deciding vote against Brett Kavanaugh. They waited with breathless anticipation as she walked into the Senate Chamber to announce her decision on live TV. There were cameras and smart phones everywhere. Liberals had trouble breathing. Then, Susan Collins surprised everyone, and I do mean everyone, by giving the speech of her life. It was nothing short of a full throttled endorsement of Brett Kavanaugh and a public indictment of those who opposed him.

In some ways, this was even more powerful than the outburst by Lyndsey Graham because she clearly was focused and in control. It was also a shot out of the blue that no one expected. She did her homework and she systematically destroyed each and every Democratic talking point. She then carefully explained why Christine Ford’s allegations against Brett Kavanaugh could not be collaborated. She eviscerated those demanding that he must be presumed guilty because this is a job interview and not a court of law. It really doesn’t get any better than this.

Democrats totally underestimated Susan Collins and as a result they made a huge mistake. It is impossible to overstate the impact of this. A lot of top Democrats and their allies in the Main Stream Media have to be in a state of shock. They have just realized their worst fear. Not only they did fail in their attempt to defeat Kavanaugh, they were humiliated on National TV. Susan Collins made all those shrieking Democratic Senators and their supporters in the Main Stream Media look like helpless and naïve children.

This reminds me of the time I attended a San Francisco 49ers game against the Philadelphia Eagles on a Monday night in Philadelphia. I love Philly fans because they wear their feelings on their sleeves. Before the game started there was a lot of hooting and hollering about how this “West Coast” team was about to learn what it like to play some real tough guys. By Half-time the 49ers were trouncing the Eagles and Joe Montana was shredding the Philadelphia defense.

The same guys who had been trash talking the 49ers before the game, were now trashing the Eagles. “I knew we couldn’t beat these guys.” By the end of the game the fans practically booed the Eagles off the field. Fortunately I was not wearing my 49er gear, so I was able to remain incognito thus avoiding serious injury. When I got back to my hotel room, I laughed hysterically.

This is a devastating loss to the liberal left. They cannot spin this away. They are the ones who said this was one battle they had to win. They are the ones who promised results. They are the ones who over-stated their case and literally encouraged nationwide protests. They lost. When your team loses, the coach is usually fired and new players are obtained. When you suffer this type of embarrassing lost, everyone is fired.

I definitely think this will suppress Democratic turnout and energize Republicans. If Democrats try and campaign on a promise to impeach Kavanaugh few people will believe them. Red State Democratic Senators who voted against Kavanaugh are likely to find themselves with red faces on election night.

Perhaps John Kennedy said it best. “Victory has a thousand fathers but defeat is an orphan.”
